Fine art paintings have a strange reputation. They used to be the most sought-after objects given their focus on beauty for beautyβs sake, with no practical errands attached. Back in the 18th century, philosopher Charles Batteux tried to describe the purpose of fine art for sale as βimitate nature, stir delight.β By the 19th century, artists reframed the narrative and wanted to create art for artβs sake, turning canvases into playgrounds of pure emotion, colour and idea. By the end of the 20th century, conceptual art began to look at fine art in an increasingly condescending way, laughing at its promise of beauty as an unrealistic goal and advocating for purely intellectual art.
But what actually makes fine art fine?
First, fine art paintings available for sale now usually use certain materials like heavyweight canvas, archival paper, seasoned wood. They also usually involve mediums built to last: buttery oils, electric acrylics, luminous watercolours, smoky charcoal, velvet-soft pastels.
Despite certain statements, fine art paintings do have purpose beyond dΓ©cor: each piece is a visual mind-to-mind telegram, reaching the senses directly through its evocative appearance.
One of the most distinctive styles in fine art was Rococo, with Jean-HonorΓ© Fragonard being a great example of the finest of fine art. His masterpiece The Swing, hanging in Londonβs Wallace Collection, is an exquisite piece of joyful and delightful presence that art can offer. Another great example of fine art is Albrecht DΓΌrerβs self-portrait, where he depicted himself almost Jesus-like yet in civil and quite elaborate clothes. It is an impressive piece of the finest quality, piercing through the viewer and taking full hold of them.
