The key characteristic of abstract art is the absence of a storyline. The main purpose of abstract paintings is for each of us to see and feel something uniquely personal, rather than focus on pre-existing compositions and narratives. Abstract paintings for sale don’t depict any particular symbols or figures; they barely have any forms. They mostly work with colour. Colour Field abstract paintings for sale are the very quintessence of abstract art and serve as the highest means of psychological communication between artist and viewer.
The abstract art movement emerged in the mid-20th century. Artists sought to convey dynamism, emotion, and aesthetic experience in colour itself, rather than in narrative or a certain gesture of the brushstroke. To see the highest examples of abstract art, look at the works of Mark Rothko or Clyfford Still. These artists worked with the spiritual essence, stepping beyond the boundaries of traditional artistic language and direct symbolism. For them, colour and simple forms became an immediate, universal channel of contact with the viewer—something that touched emotions deeply. They achieved a state where colour relationships alone can make you feel the movement—or even a sense of spatial depth.
One could argue that Kazimir Malevich’s Suprematism at the beginning of the 20th century was a prototype of abstract art. While still relying on narrative and storyline, he was one of the first to play with minimalist forms, abstract ideas and dynamic composition. His Black Square is a great example of abstract art, of course.
