Modern art paintings were born from the clatter of 19th-century factories. Fascination with modern art continued up to the neon blur of 1970s nightlife. This time was characterised by painters who rewired the canvas into action so the world could see its future—louder, faster, stranger.
There are debates around which artwork to consider the first modern painting. Many would nominate Manet’s Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe or Courbet’s defiant Atelier du peintre. But that is hardly important. What matters is that modern artists ditched polite realism for risky experiments. They broke with centuries-old traditions. From Van Gogh’s volcanic yellow colour to Seurat’s pixel dots to Toulouse-Lautrec’s cabaret whirl, they paved the way for Matisse’s colour storms and Expressionists’ dedication to pure colour experiments.
Modern artists significantly changed the techniques used to create their paintings. What became a common theme from Impressionists to Expressionists was action. The canvas became a vibrant space meant to impact the viewer rather than depict reality. One of the greatest examples was Jackson Pollock, who slung enamel like a jazz drummer riffing, creating a rhythm frozen mid-air. Willem de Kooning was experimenting with texture to achieve the same. He scraped, smeared and sanded paint until figures half-emerged from the canvas, like memories you would swear were real.
Fauves and Expressionists played heavily with colours. They dialled hues to eleven, in a successful attempt to depict emotions and influence the viewer to feel them.
